Today, she lives with her husband and an adorable rescue dog from Texas. Jessica finds inspiration in nature. Exploring the majestic coastline of her state is one of her favorite things to do. For Jessica and her husband, these trips provide a time to reflect on their beloved son, Joshua. Jessica continues to find inspiration from her son in all areas of her life.

Bernadette Conte
Author Bernadette Conte has lived a colorful life thus far — one that is rife with love, joy, fear, faith, and unwavering hope.
Her writings are deeply influenced by her rich Italian background as well as her passion for biographies, autobiographies, and spiritual books about those who endured hardships and triumphed through their perseverance and faith.
Born as the third child to a family of six children, this Rhode Island native owes her writing career to her mother who, like her, had a penchant for storytelling. Growing up, Bernadette took to heart her mother’s urging to scrivi e recorda — write and remember.
Her maternal grandparents, parents’ and many other Italian immigrants’ faith, courage, and hard work in the face of adversity left a lifelong impression on her, which gave her the impetus to one day tell their story and fulfill the promise she made to her mother.
Her first book, Eviva Maria, Madonna della Civita, is an interesting non-fiction about her church’s history, borne from a collection of documents and discoveries. Her second book, Under the Pear Tree, is a moving account of the trials, traumas, and emotional life surrounding the 19th-century Italian immigrant experience. Her third book, Trauma at the Border, is a gripping true story about her husband’s battle with cancer and their disturbing ordeal at the US–Mexico border, involving ICE and a certain drug cartel.
She is the founder of Mary’s Way, Women to Woman, a Christian spiritual group dealing with the spiritual, psychological, and physical needs of women. In earlier years, she initiated group inner healing services throughout the East Coast and has continued this ministry when called upon to groups and those in crisis.
When she is not writing, Bernadette spends her days doting on her two children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandson, as well as fondly remembering her husband, Ralph C. Conte, who passed in 2000, and her involvement with friends, church, and community activities. She is a member of the Rhode Island Author’s Association and is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island.

Sarah Elizabeth
Sarah Elizabeth lives in Rhode Island with her incredible children, Lexi and Joey. A CPA by trade, her life took a series of twists and turns that changed her perspective on life, love and home. She has found that her true calling is learning to see life through a lens of blessings, gratitude and vulnerability and creating a safe space for others to do the same.
When the White Picket Fence Is No Longer Enough opens the door for unguarded conversations about life’s ugliest encounters - and the most beautiful ones. Through Sarah’s removal of her own masks of who she thought she was supposed to be, others will be invited and supported in doing the same. Through unguarding ourselves as women, as mothers, as struggling humans, we have the power to learn to connect with others at their most primal and basic level - unconditional love - and that is exactly what this book will do for its readers.
Through the power of pen and paper, Sarah began to review her experiences with a sense of humility, gratitude, and grace. What started as a way of personal healing and reconciliation has become a motivating belief that there is power in the ability to self-review and self-accept that will have a lasting impact on a wide variety of audiences. As a mother, a mother of a differing-needs child, a divorced mother, and a professional, the journey from external expectations and demands to understanding herself and seeing others in their rawest essence will resonate with a diverse population who are also trying to find their way in this world. Through sharing her lessons on life, love and acceptance, her perspective invites vulnerability into our everyday existence, whether that be at work or at home, with strangers or our closest social groups.

Cynthia Di Filippo Elomaa
Cynthia Di Filippo Elomaa grew up in the village of Ardsley, NY. A quiet place where the schools are small, academics are hard and sports are big. Struggling with the academic part, in gym class Cynthia realized she loved to swim. Yes, Ardsley Middle School has its own pool, and as part of the physical education curriculum, there was a swim class every year. One of the only students who could master the butterfly stroke Cynthia joined the swim team and later on joined the high school volleyball team.
It was her middle school English teacher who told her she could be a writer. With renewed passion that she was actually good at something she enjoyed, she realized her dream to become an author. The road to college was hard, but she got there. In college, she studied English Literature with plans on working for a publishing company as an editor. Life as they say happens though. She met her husband in college, got married, and eventually moved to Rhode Island and started a family.
Never forgetting her dream, Cynthia wrote whenever she could. It wasn’t until after getting married and raising her two boys as a stay-at-home mom, that the Nicky picture book series was born.
Cynthia is an Executive Assistant by day, a freelancer and an author of picture books and young adult novels by night, a member of SCBWI, and runs a critique group for other writers.

Dr. Bary Fleet
I was born to help people feel better about themselves. (It’s a long story!) Professionally, I became a parish minister. Honestly, I had a love-hate relationship with that. (Another long story!) In that role, I helped grow – by any measure you want to use – three congregations, each under very different circumstances. Along the way, I became an Adjunct member of the faculty of Candler School of Theology at Emory University. I helped originate the “Teaching Parish” program there.
I earned my doctorate in Counseling at Boston University, was the Director of a non-profit counseling center, and co-founded my own counseling center. In addition to serving local faith communities, for almost thirty years I have been – and continue to be – an Adjunct faculty member at Bryant University and Johnson & Wales University.
I have been helping people in all ages and stages of life, from teens to folks in their nineties – work through feelings of guilt, inadequacy, anxiety, anger, grief, trauma and depression – just to name a few. I have helped people work through relationship issues, life crises and life transitions.

M.A. Guglielmo
M.A. Guglielmo is a neurosurgeon, mother of two awesome daughters, and a life-long fan of speculative fiction. Her Italian grandmother may or may not have been able to cast the evil eye on difficult neighbors, and she loves telling a good story, especially if magical curses and witty villains are involved.

After having the wits scared out of her by ghost tales told to her over a campfire in the Moroccan Sahara, she’s come up with a plan to travel to all the potential settings for her novels. Since those include the mountain-ringed home of the Jinn and a modernized version of the Greek Underworld, some items on her bucket list might be harder to achieve than others.

Don N. Hagist

His focus on demographics and material culture of the British Army in the American Revolution grew from the discovery that there was paucity of literature on the common British soldier, and that much of the conventional wisdom on the subject was inconsistent with available first-hand information. This led to a continuing quest to find and assimilate primary sources in Great Britain and America to better understand the thousands of professional British soldiers who served during the 1775-1783 war.
Don’s specific areas of expertise include British operations in Rhode Island, demographics of the British army, and wives of British soldiers. He maintains a blog about British common soldiers and has published a number of articles in academic journals.
His most recent books, The Revolution’s Last Men: The Soldiers behind the Photographs (Westholme Publishing, 2015) and British Soldiers, American War (Westholme Publishing, 2012), are available from major booksellers.

Now I write books that aim to connect with both the younger me and the person I have evolved into.

In her self-help memoir, Relentless: From National Champion to Physically Disabled Activist, Katherine writes from the heart about the lessons she’s learned from living with a diseased body– from denial to resistance to, finally, acceptance, understanding, and the desire to help others.

I always liked imaging things and would often day dream of my favorite senerios or things I enjoyed and wanted to recreate them and have fun. I'm big into movies, tv shows, video games, anime, and reading manga. Being immersed in those things really increased my love of story telling. I really fell in love with actually putting words on paper in high school and more in college when I took lots of script writing and short story classes. They opened my mind to different styles of writing and bringing stories to life. I have lots of stories in my head that I want to share with everyone. My first book, "Beyond The Forest" is volume 1 of a crazy scfi adventure I want to take everyone on. I hope you enjoy.

This also included a world tour as road manager for an iconic band, housed on a Baron’s estate in Scotland. During this period, with so many in the artist community upset about corporate domination of the Arts, Thomas penned and self-published the book The Artists’ Manifesto. He is currently at work on an updated version; the vital role the Arts play in this challenging time of political unrest and Climate Change.

Rebecca Miller
I had never thought of myself as a writer; therefore, never thought about writing for publication.
Writing doesn’t come easy for me—reading hasn’t always—but I’m a passionate person who throws my entire self into whatever I do if I believe strongly enough in it. So when the characters from Touch restlessly invaded my head one day with the sole purpose of having their story told, I decided right away that failure was not an option. I first put pen to paper in November of 2005 with no writing experience whatsoever. After what felt like a lifetime of learning the craft, countless ups and downs—to include over seven hundredrejections from literary agents—true blood, sweat, tons of tears, and constantly telling myself that hard work, patience, and persistence usually result in success, I finally published Touchindependently in April of 2021.
After such a long and tumultuous journey with these characters, I can wholeheartedly say that I don’t know who I would be without them.
My goal now, while I wait to see if they have more to say, is to create an online space for reader-inspired art: drawings, paintings, photography, journal entries, poems, etcetera (from real-life experiences, Megan-inspired, or imagined), submitted with credit or anonymously, to help show those who may have similar circumstances that they are not alone.

David Orsini
As a reader, I have always bonded with novels and short stories to learn more about myself and about other human beings. Through these novels and stories, I have met human beings whose lives change because of what they have done or what they have not done. I have also learned about the world that offers these human beings many promises, challenges, and rewards and that sometimes betrays them. As a writer, I have offered my readers a view of that world and of the human beings who, like themselves, accept its challenges and rewards and endure despite its betrayals. Through the novels and stories that I create, I am not only a writer. I am also a teacher.
I am a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brown University, with degrees that include a Ph.D. in English Literature. For many years, I taught literature, grammar, and composition in Cranston High School East and in Park View Middle School in Rhode Island. I have happy memories of that cycle in my life. I continue to teach through my novels and my short stories. Young and older readers have enjoyed meeting the characters in my books and connecting to their compelling lives.
I have written six novels, a collection of stories, and a novella.
I write literary fiction. Two of my novels (THE WOMAN WHO LOVED TOO WELL and THE GHOST LOVERS) find their tension and their surprise in World War Two romantic triangles. SCHEMES, DISGUISES, & TRAPS is anchored to suspenseful noir fiction. THE WEAVER OF PLOTS centers upon a woman’s revenge against the man who betrayed her. VANISHING BY DEGREES is a teen/adult crossover novel that melds the supernatural and the realistic. In my novella THE SUBTLETIES OF SEDUCTION, a boat race on Newport, Rhode Island waters during the summer of 1920 initiates a scenario of scandal, malice, and duplicity. BITTERNESS/SEVEN STORIES explores the lives of characters that are tested as well as transformed or defeated by the loss of a spouse or children and other relatives during a world war. Some of the characters are tested by the aftermath of a fatal air crash, by terminal illness, and by unrequited love.
As a teacher and a writer, I am especially pleased that the Study Guide Edition of VANISHING BY DEGREES is scheduled to become a part of the tenth-grade language arts curriculum in well-rated Rhode Island schools.
Recently, I have completed my sixth novel (and eighth book), THE REAPPEARING. It is a novel about transformation and about reappearing to oneself as somebody renewed, restored, and different. The novel will be published in 2023.
Daniel Orsini
Daniel Orsini is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brown University, where he earned three degrees in English Literature (A.B., A.M., and Ph.D.). He taught for many years at Rhode Island College as an Associate Professor of English. He is the author of Galactic Pilgrim and On the Care and Feeding of Robots. His poems, which examine the spiritual as well as the psychological effects of being a Christian, offer an amalgam of diverse yet related influences that include John Donne; Alfred, Lord Tennyson; and Emily Dickinson. Another significant source of Daniel’s poems derives from the sonnet sequences of Edmund Spenser, Sir Philip Sidney, and William Shakespeare.
University scholars and authors have praised Daniel’s work. Alfred Turco, the author of Shaw’s Moral Vision: The Self and Salvation, finds Daniel’s poetry “meticulously crafted, densely argued, and thematically rich.” Daniel’s books are “nothing less than prophecies of redemptive consciousness for humankind in the twenty-first century.” Gary Grund, the author of Humanist Tragedies, compares Daniel’s poems to “a collection of strands woven into a distinctive pattern that speaks to the twenty-first century.” Winfried Schleiner, the author of The Imagery of John Donne’s Sermons, also admires Daniel’s poetry: “Almost every poem plays on powerful symbols of the past.”
Daniel’s current book is A User’s Guide to Spacetime.

Mary Puma
MARY PUMA is an award-winning, Three-Time Emmy Nominated Producer for Public Television and a born storyteller. As a child, there was no such thing as a 'commercial' in Mary's mind as she watched her most loved 60s and Early 70s sitcom reruns every day after school. The story would be continuous as she would play out what was going on with the families in her mind during the breaks. Her debut novel, W.W.W.O.M. (Witches, Wizards, Winks, Oh My!) was inspired by one of the most powerful and impressionable tales for Mary as a child, The Wizard of Oz. It is this base that inspired her to put her creativity and passion onto the page and into reader's hearts.
Richard Radimer
TR Rankin
I have always been obsessive about historical detail in my work. If I put a character in a particular historical situation, I have to know what “actually happened” before I can write about it. This is certainly true in my historical and mystery books, but even in my fantasy novels, I felt I had to be consistent with historical norms even in constructing a mythical ancient society.
Such research not only helps me avoid stupid blunders (please, please!) but often unearths things that enrich the scene. Sometimes these things even change the course of the narrative, usually for the better.
However, most of the time, I unearth more than I can use for my story. But as many of these things are interesting in themselves, I think they will make interesting posts. They will provide additional context and explore some of the things the characters might have seen and experienced that have impacted their lives.

Over the years, she has won many regional and local journalism awards for her work, and her stories about her experience in an Amtrak train crash in 1987 were nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Anthony Rondeau
My first book, “WHAT I KNOW (so far)” was released July 2022. Other easily researched public information reveals I am a married man in my 50’s and, for most of my life I have lived, worked, and been educated in Rhode Island. Via an online search into my professional background, I have experience in finance and sales. A search engine query into my social media participation would expose that I am fond of dumb jokes and keen to spin tall tales, but pretty much inept with social media presentation. A sneaky, probative, and illegal online foray into my circumstances would show I own a 1965 Ford Mustang, have Whole Life insurance policies and that I pay all of my bills on time. Though it is possible to uncover I am married with children, it would be impossible to know they are the center of my world.
I describe myself as personable, passionate, and persistent, though my friends might add another ‘p’ for pain-in-the-ass.
Richard Rook
I am a lawyer, genealogist and author, living in Wrentham, Massachusetts with my wife Dyan, an artist. I grew up in Greenville, Rhode Island. I've always loved stories. The more fantastical, the better. Unicorns were an early favorite of mine; I must have watched The Last Unicorn a thousand times as a child, driving my parents to near insanity. I devoured every book I could get my hands on – trips to Barnes and Noble were hotly anticipated.
Anime (thanks, Toonami!) and video games were other favorites. I watched Sailor Moon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Gundam Wing, played Zelda and Mario. Mythology also grabbed me, made me think of how other cultures viewed the world.
And eventually... I began telling my own stories. I'm grateful to have found readers like you who want to explore the world I've created, and walk a few miles with the characters I love. Thank you!

Wanda Springer
Of all the labels I could list about who I am, I feel most at peace saying I am a poet. I have been writing poetry or prose since I could write. It was just natural to express myself writing stories, humor, or poetry. What started out as a ‘just me’ thing evolved into a survival tool. Writing is a way to make sense of the world: events, situations, relationships, losses, successes, love. Writing and the use of metaphor morphed into an essential method to find meaning in life.
Writing came in handy while in grad school but, more importantly, after getting my MSW at Boston University. Working with clients suffering with addiction and mental health issues, I had to find a way to process so much trauma being presented. When I learned about the concept of vicarious traumatization, I realized I was experiencing some of that and turned to the thing that helped me throughout my life: writing. I wrote about my reactions and feelings about this sacred relationship: therapist and client. That processed helped me manage the hard work of being a therapist.
While in the midst of my career, my own life-stuff erupted. Memories were triggered, feelings were reactivated. Old stuff came into the light once more. I learned to turn off my stuff so I could hold space for others. But when the day was done, I needed to process it all. Some of those writings are in Hawk on Fire.
Creativity is as necessary as oxygen. So I find ways to be embrace it. In addition to writing, I paint abstracts with oils. I use themes such as: Listen, Wait, Survival, Courage, Be, Grief. I look toward an emotion and try to capture it in color, shape, texture, light, energy. Because it matters.
I look forward to your responses and reviews about the topics in Hawk on Fire, a most personal and exciting reveal of parts of my life.

Marilyn Mott Tolleson
Buddy's Tattoo Shop is a collection of stories from our family tattoo business in memory of my father, artist Buddy Mott. I tattooed beside him for almost the last 30 years of his 59 year career in Newport, Rhode Island. I categorize my telling of these stories as an audio book on paper, and if I had to rate it I’d give it a PG13. Well, maybe PG 15…and a half. In his early days back from WWII this Army Veteran tattooed thousands of squids that came thru the Navy port, and shipped out all over the globe. Tattooed sailors on the move and the pride Buddy took in his artwork gave him the opportunity to become known worldwide. Newport in the late 1970’s was being transformed into a sailing/tourist spot. Our father/daughters team tattooed customers from all walks of life (with or without motorcycles) now wanting to wear some permanent art. I’m pretty sure only one was a nun. Included are also some of our tattoo tips, trade secrets for fellow artists and tattoo collectors plus some of the unusual though entertaining requests we got on a nightly basis.
